Looks East, Sounds West

While at Cartel for dinner, I happen to be seated quite closely beside this PRC couple. I have nothing against them... except for their accent. I hate fakos... Fake accents in this case.

The guy was trying his best to punctuate each and every syllable that comes out of his mouth with a thick English accent. The lady was also following suit, albeit less successfully. Now and then she'll lapse into chinese accented english or even revert to mandarin.

Why do people look up to the West so much, that they start trying to mimick them?

This reminds me of a friend of mine, who pours all praises for anything Western.. Be it as a holiday location, the culture, music, fashion etc. And any mention of anything in relation Chinese or even Asian turns her off. Mind you, she's very much yellow-skinned. So I do wonder if she hates herself. Would she do a Michael Jackson? lol I can't wait!
